Tips: Protect motor from bearing failure with a correctly specified VFD.
A correctly specified and installed variable frequency drive (VFD) system will not damage bearings or motor equipment, it will actually prolong and protect the motor and extend its life. It is important to talk to your VFD manufactures engineers to find out how to do this as it does not just happen by buying the cheapest VFD you can find, and do not buy the cheapest motor either. Buy one that is designed for VFD service.
Whatever the performance of the VFD, the most important thing is to protect your motor from the VFD induced shaft current which will ultimately destroy the motor bearings (or whatever is connected downstream in case the motor have insulated bearings). A lot of people have mistaken the failure of the bearings as mechanical failure. However, if you cut opened the failed bearing and notice fluting (washing board pattern) or frosting (white line along the wall), this is proof that there have been electrical discharge through the bearing.
